I invited neighbors (and whoever they wanted to bring) from the ‘hood to meet with the police and firefighters, to find out what is going on: what types of calls they are getting, and what we can do to help them and our neighbors. They were with us for maybe an hour? It was the first time in 2? years that we had this meeting, in my front yard.
One of the interesting items that they suggested (and some neighbors already had them) was getting a (some) camera(s) to take photos of who is coming to the front door: who is going down the driveway: and if nobody is home…you can receive something like a video of what the camera sees. Apparently you can say something to those ‘unknowns’ because the app is on the cell phone. There were several interesting stories from the neighbors and from the cops, about those cameras.
Neighbors had seen some weird things going on. You can also show the police a recording of a video. It was pretty interesting (almost appalling) what was happening.
One item that was of interest to all was how fast the cars were going on our street. In my wildest dreams, I would sit on my front porch and clock what speeds they would be traveling, stop signs being run, etc. Then I’d send a copy of the video to the police…and they could ticket that driver.
There was some talk about automated license plate readers (ALPR), but that seems to cross the line of privacy.
All in all, it was a good way to spend the evening. Oh, and one of the neighbors brought me some flowers from her yard! I picked Meyer lemons off the tree/bush in the backyard, washed them off, and let folks (including the AFD and APD) take some of those lovely yellow delights home with them.
