Alameda’s National Night Out

This past Tuesday was the National Night Out!

One of the interesting items that they suggested (and some neighbors already had them) was getting a (some) camera(s) to take photos of who is coming to the front door: who is going down the driveway: and if nobody is home…you can receive something like a video of what the camera sees. Apparently you can say something to those ‘unknowns’ because the app is on the cell phone. There were several interesting stories from the neighbors and from the cops, about those cameras.

Neighbors had seen some weird things going on. You can also show the police a recording of a video. It was pretty interesting (almost appalling) what was happening.

One item that was of interest to all was how fast the cars were going on our street. In my wildest dreams, I would sit on my front porch and clock what speeds they would be traveling, stop signs being run, etc. Then I’d send a copy of the video to the police…and they could ticket that driver.

There was some talk about automated license plate readers (ALPR), but that seems to cross the line of privacy.

All in all, it was a good way to spend the evening. Oh, and one of the neighbors brought me some flowers from her yard!  I picked Meyer lemons off the tree/bush in the backyard, washed them off, and let folks (including the AFD and APD) take some of those lovely yellow delights home with them.

OK! I’m done. On to my next blog…

???? ask me! Need vendor referrals? Ask me! HOWEVER, I will tell you that the vendors are booked solid with work…and it most likely will take some time before they can get to you!

A previous customer of mine (she doesn’t live here but she owns property here) is in the middle of doing some sewer work. I volunteered to call the owner, because his workers were on site. I called the company (they were at her houses) and she wanted me to verify what they were doing, what they were charging her for, and and why the price went up! The contractor called me back and explained what was happening, and there were more underground sewage pipes (than they expected). This is what happens when 1) you own an older property 2) don’t do regular (required) maintenance on it and live out of town.

PLUS; I wanted to have a bid (for myself) for power washing this house. I called several businesses (the one I used to use went out of biz this last year) and the one who was to show up today and give me a bid…never showed up. argh! Then it came to me to call my painting company that painted this beast almost? 2 years ago. YAY! They know the house, and they will do the power washing for me! YAY YAY!

Best, marilyn

I arrived in Alameda in 1973, as a new bride...with husband Carl Schumacher, both of us from Newport Beach. He was embarking on his career as a Naval Architect (i.e. yacht designer) under Gary Mull. Please see the 'ABOUT ME' page in this website! to see how it has all turned out! I'm so blessed!
