My refrigerator sounds like bongo drums…

What does this subject have to do with real estate?

I bought a new refrigerator sometime during 2019. It needs to fit in a well-defined spot (which is surrounded by cabinetry).

Wouldn’t you know it…the warranty was for 1 year. I called the Oakland store I bought it from, and they kinda shrugged their shoulders (at least it seemed that way to me) and said they couldn’t do anything. I called the manufacturer, Frigidaire, and they said it was out of warranty. Duh, I knew that.

Being in real estate for a long time, I do have some connections when it comes to vendors. I called my favorite appliance repair person…and the job demanded more than he could service. BUT he referred to somebody who could help me. So I called him.

We were texting back and forth (I am not a good texter because I have man-hands). I told him that I have several recordings on my phone. “That’s great!” he said. Send one of those to me. OMG. Now I needed to figure out how to send a recording from my phone to his phone.

Somehow, by the Grace of God, I sent a “sound” text of the bongo drums to him it. He asked me some questions. He told me exactly what it was (the condenser), and that I’d probably spend more money with him attempting to fix it than to buy another refrigerator. Argh. He assured me that it would continue to work, after he asked me some more questions.

If you need a vendor, I may have one for you (sometimes 3 of them), and I know they’re honest and good folks. And I know that you would let me know if they didn’t meet your expectations. And I check my list before I send them to you…to verify that they’re still in biz. IF YOU HAVE SOME FAVORITE VENDORS, WOULD YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW?

If I want a new refrig, I won’t go back to the place that I bought it from. I’m willing to live with the bongo drum sounds for now. But for the next refrigerator, I may start at Airport Home Appliance, in Hayward. That owner looks very nice and sincere on TV. And I will definitely ask about an extended warranty.

I arrived in Alameda in 1973, as a new bride...with husband Carl Schumacher, both of us from Newport Beach. He was embarking on his career as a Naval Architect (i.e. yacht designer) under Gary Mull.
