“Little boxes” is NOT what Alameda is!

Anybody remember the song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds?

Here’s the first verse- (click on the link above to see all the verses)

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same

I first heard this when my family moved from San Diego to the San Francisco area, namely Daly City, where we rented a home while my folks built a new house across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was written in 1962 and I remember it because Daly City was rows and rows of matching boxes on hillsides (which quaked ever so gently).

Well, Alameda is not rows and rows of houses ( I mean freestanding houses, not townhomes or condos) and we’re definitely not on hillsides.

The photos are from my recent listing (which is now pending) of the tiled bathroom floor, and the brick tiled fireplace. It takes an artist’s appreciation to find these patterns (and I’m no artist). But somebody at an open house pointed this out to me.

Alameda property runs the gamut in ages, styles, areas. Love it!

I arrived in Alameda in 1973, as a new bride...with husband Carl Schumacher, both of us from Newport Beach. He was embarking on his career as a Naval Architect (i.e. yacht designer) under Gary Mull. Please see the 'ABOUT ME' page in this website! www.MarilynSchumacher.com to see how it has all turned out! I'm so blessed!
