THE SECOND STORY | October 6th, 2011

I love Alameda autumn, rain or shine.

Blog photo: Pumpkins…but some of them look like they’ve come up from the deep sea complete with barnacles on them.  Others are clearly land-lovers but with warts, zits, and wrinkles.  These were among hundreds for sale at Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach in mid September.  They are a far cry from the ‘perfect pumpkins’ I was taught to cherish and far more interesting….just like people!

Blog post:  Even with early and earnest rain this week it was a joy to get on my bike during the bright bursts of sunshine….well, at least during the lighter shades of gray.

After checking out the 94502 and east end listings by car due to some required auto errands, I got on the bike to see the rest from mid-island towards the west.  Not too many on the tour but just too hard to resist putting on that stupid looking net vest that makes me look like a crossing guard.  And I hate the helmet too.  But I wear it.

In between showers this week, I’ve pedaled to the nail place (not Paganos) for a mani/pedi, over to Panera for a loaf of bread, to Park Street to meet up with my accountant, to Trader Joes, to Bank of Alameda, to the post office, to the listings I have east end to west.

It is simply amazing to me to live in such a place that so naturally promotes walking, running, riding, skateboarding, roller blade-ing (sp?), board and kite surfing, sandcastle building, even wheel-chairing along the path on Shoreline.  It’s just so great!

The leaves are turning and dropping…our mild Pacific-rimmed version of fall. The shadows are longer, earlier.  But the light…the natural light is so gorgeous to me.  I don’t understand why but the lower sun in the sky just seems to zap it’s way through the atmosphere with more vibrancy.  I guess I don’t need to know why.  It’s simply beautiful to me.

I arrived in Alameda in 1973, as a new bride...with husband Carl Schumacher, both of us from Newport Beach. He was embarking on his career as a Naval Architect (i.e. yacht designer) under Gary Mull. Please see the 'ABOUT ME' page in this website! www.MarilynSchumacher.com to see how it has all turned out! I'm so blessed!
