Pizza carpet, lettuce carpet

Blog photo: This was a remnant of carpet put down about 40 years ago in one of our vintage, old ‘get-me-to-rehab’ homes.  I saw this on tour a few weeks ago and asked if I could take a picture!  Permission was granted.

Some of you know the phrase ‘pizza carpet.’  That’s the mottled brown and orange shag stuff that if you dropped a pizza on it you wouldn’t be able to find it.  I wish I could say that was original to me but it’s not.  Got it from a long time Alameda broker, a long time ago.

This green equivalent of pizza carpet I have named lettuce carpet.  It looks a bit like varieties of the green stuff tossed and spread out, and for all I know there may be dressing in it.  The more appropriate name probably should be ‘let us remove it.’

Blog post: One of the lovely side benefits of filing the pile of months of paper, is finding stuff already in the folders that may be of interest now.  And that happened for me last week.  I’ve kept in print format copies of many newsletters I’ve prepped and sent over the decades.  And some of my editorial bits still ring true today.  So here’s an updated version from a newsletter dated fall of 2007.

Sellers often have separation problems.  Separating their stuff from the house they are leaving.  If Buyers wanted your stuff they’d ask for it or buy it.  Mostly THEY DON’T WANT YOUR STUFF!

There’s lots of ways to get rid of stuff these days: Alameda Freecyle, CraigsList, e-Bay, a one night stand (really, maybe a night stand!) on the curb for a drive by scavenger.

I had clients who had a wonderful Fernside home.  They forgot to empty a hall closet.  They asked if could grab the jackets, coats, hat and gloves, and ship them.  My pleasure. No problem. Got it done.

But in the depths of that narrow closet I found a shot gun AND the ammunition for it!  I called the owner and he had not seen the gun for years and didn’t remember it was even there.  He had already put his others on the moving truck.  But I couldn’t ship that!  What to do?

I took it to the police department but I was told I’d have to wait 2-3 hours for the officers to come in from important calls.  I gave up and stuck the thing back in my car trunk along with the bullets.

I went back to the property to meet up with my hauler who was getting rid of the HUGE pile of stuff I’d made the night before when I’d gone in to check out the house.  WHOA….loads of stuff left behind: wood debris, garage debris, a vacuum, a waffle iron, old pots and pans, food in the refrig, canned goods in the cupboard, old shelf paper, old cleaning materials, old doggie beds, on and on.  I took pictures (not the phone kind) in case there were questions!

When I came back from the police department the Buyers were off-loading their boxes. Together we went through and found more items graciously left behind but that they didn’t want.  And the gun? Well, I showed it to my hauler.  He said it was broken but would look good on his wall, permission granted from the owner.

First impressions are critical for selling.  Last impressions, just before the close of escrow, are also important.  Sellers end up paying to get rid of the stuff in almost all cases.  And it will cost the Sellers as much if not more to have the pro get rid of it, especially if time is critical.  Keep the separation anxiety for the drive away moments and memories at the property that is no longer yours!


I’m going to keep this short.  It’s been a long and rather amazing four days.  I went to Dana Point for a two day class, framed by seeing my dad and step mom.  Things had turned bad for Dad the previous 9 days.  Yesterday about two hours after my last visit with him, and after family members from New Zealand, Florida, and San Diego had expressed their gratitude, love, and goodbyes, via the cell phone I held next to his ear, he passed on quietly, comfortably, without drama.  Suffice it to say…well, that’s just it.  Suffice it to say.
